I am a Professor of Economic Evaluation of Innovations for Health at the Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam. In addition, I serve as the Scientific Director of the Institute for Medical Technology Assessment (iMTA).
I teach Health Technology Assessment and Pharmaceutical Pricing and Market Access in the Master’s program in Health Economics, Policy, and Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. My expertise lies in economic evaluation studies, conducted either alongside clinical trials or using probabilistic decision-analytic modeling, as well as in outcomes research. Over the years, I have worked across various disease areas, including respiratory diseases such as COPD and asthma, as well as rheumatology, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Pompe disease. I have a particular interest in assessing the cost-effectiveness, financing, and payment of complex multi-faceted interventions that drive system-level changes, such as integrated care programs, disease management programs, hospital-at-home initiatives, and outpatient rehabilitation programs. Additionally, I am deeply engaged in the health economics of personalized medicine.
With nearly 30 years of experience, I have led numerous applied economic evaluations and Health Technology Assessment (HTA) methodology studies, resulting in high-level publications. I coordinate SELFIE, a Horizon2020 project on integrated care in multi-morbidity, and contribute to the Horizon2020 HEcoPerMed project, which focuses on developing guidance for health economic modeling, financing, and payment strategies for personalized medicine.
I was trained as a health scientist with additional expertise in health economics and epidemiology. I obtained an MSc in Healthcare Policy and Management from Maastricht University in 1988 and a PhD in Health Economics from the same university in 1994. I joined iMTA as a senior researcher in 1996, following my role as an assistant professor in Health Economics and Medical Technology Assessment at the Department of Health Economics at Maastricht University.
